Benjamin Watkins Leigh (1781-1849), a native of Chesterfield County, Virginia, was educated at William and Mary College, and practiced law in Petersburg and Richmond, Virginia. He was a member of the House of Delegates, supervised the revision of the Virginia Code in 1819, was a member of the 1829-30, Constitutional convention, and U.S. Senator. C.W. Murdaugh was a lawyer, judge and politician and fought  on the side of the Confederate Army during the Civil War.  He was the son of James Murdaugh (1799-1871), also a Portsmouth lawyer.Excerpts from the Virginia State Bar Association Proceedings:"Claudius W.
